Mercyhealth REACT has added a new Airbus EC145 helicopter to its air medical programme.

With the new helicopter, which replaces an EC135 aircraft, REACT will be able to support a wide range of missions and deliver specialised care. It will enable the company to provide high quality, round-the-clock service for the most critically ill and injured patients across northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa.

Mercyhealth REACT works in partnership with Air Methods, a Colorado-based helicopter operator. Air Methods deploys aviation, fuel and maintenance, while Mercyhealth provides all medical staffing, patient care and clinical services for the air medical programme.

The new Airbus EC145 features a spacious interior and is equipped with a variety of critical care supplies and medications, including oxygen, airway resuscitation equipment, heart monitor/defibrillator, suction, IV pump and fluids, specialised monitor/testing equipment, ventilators and emergency medications. The helicopter's large main cabin allows the REACT team to have head-to-toe access to patients and optimised capabilities during the transport of neonatal patients. When needed, the aircraft’s capability can also expand with the added versatility of an incubator.
