Leonardo has received an order from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) to supply one AW139 helicopter to support its emergency response mission.

The aircraft will join the LAFD’s existing fleet of four AW139 helicopters. It will be used to perform missions including fire suppression, emergency medical service and SAR.

Customised equipment for the aircraft includes search light, rescue hoist, advanced water tank for fire suppression, wire-cutter and modular cabin interior.

The LAFD is responsible for more than 400 square-miles, 106 stations, and over 3,200 firefighters. The LAFD's air operations mission includes fire suppression, air ambulance transport, hoist rescues, reconnaissance and mapping. Its helicopter fleet is housed at Van Nuys Airport.

The aircraft is expected to be delivered in spring 2019.
