Heli-One is developing a Doppler replacement solution for the Airbus Helicopters AS332L/L1 with auto-hover function, the company announced on 3 October.

According to the company, the current Doppler system in auto-hover situations is unstable and inconsistent over homogenous surfaces such as calm sea states and cannot provide consistent radar return.

Heli-One’s Doppler solution uses an altitude and heading reference system (AHRS) and an ARINC 429 converter to improve reliability and safety. This replacement solution is also intended to increase accuracy in auto hover situations, improve situational awareness, be cheaper to maintain and reduce the avionics system’s weight by approximately 10kg.

The new system will feed into the flight director coupler and hover metre with both lateral and longitudinal ground speed. The AHRS will be augmented with GPS data from the aircraft's flight management system.
