Local media has reported that China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has entered a batch of at least five Y-20 strategic transport aircraft into service in the Western Theater Command.

Built by the Xian Aircraft Industrial Corporation, the Y-20 performed its maiden flight in January 2013 and the first aircraft were handed over to the PLAAF in June 2016.

As reported by Shephard, the aircraft will be operated by the 4th Transport Division in the Western Theatre Command of the PLA, where it will support units covering areas including Tibet, the Indian border and Xinjiang.

The Y-20 has a range of 5,200km with a 51t payload, making it capable of carrying the ZTZ-99A main battle tank.

Around 300-400 aircraft are expected to be produced for the PLAAF.
