WFEL to upgrade army bridges
WFEL has been awarded a £30 million contract to deliver upgrades to the US Army for its Dry Support Bridge (DSB) systems, the company announced on 11 July.
Under the five-year agreement, WFEL will procure and fit upgrade kits for 97 DSBs, with 34 systems to be upgraded in the initial 12 months.
The upgrade kit features a new launching beam and additional bridge panel, as well as additional components to strengthen the launch vehicle. The kits, which can be retrofitted to existing systems, increase the bridge span from 40m to 46m.
WFEL will also deliver a comprehensive training programme on operation and maintenance to the US Army, along with a spares package, including a hydraulic adapter kit that enables repairs in the field.
The DSB was first developed in 1996 as temporary infrastructure in combat situations and for natural disasters. It can be deployed within 90 minutes by an eight-member crew.
The US Army has 108 DSBs in its inventory; the force has deployed the system in combat and emergency operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
