US Navy guided-missile cruiser USS Hué City has entered the cruiser modernisation programme at Norfolk Naval Base in the US.

During the period of major overhaul and modernisation the vessel will undergo extensive structural, mechanical, and combat systems upgrades to extend its service life into the 2030s and improve air defence capabilities.

USS Hué City is the seventh of 11 cruisers to be inducted into the programme. The first six are in various stages of returning to the fleet with modernised capability.

Capt Kevin Byrne, program manager for surface ship modernization, said: ‘The induction of Hué City is a major milestone for the CG Mod programme.

‘Her upcoming overhaul will not only extend the life of this critical capability, but will help the navy on its mission to grow the fleet and expand our warfighting advantage.’
