Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has delivered the amphibious transport dock USS Portland to the US Navy, the company announced on 18 September.

To date, HII has delivered 11 San Antonio class ships to the US Navy and currently has one more, Fort Lauderdale, under construction.

The San Antonio class is the latest addition to the navy’s 21st century amphibious assault force. The 684ft vessels are used to embark land marines, their equipment and supplies ashore through air cushion or conventional landing craft and amphibious assault vehicles, augmented by helicopters or vertical take-off and landing aircraft such as the MV-22 Osprey.

The ships support a Marine Air Ground Task Force across the spectrum of operations, conducting amphibious and expeditionary missions of sea control and power projection as well as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.
