BAE Systems has received a $46.8 million contract option to upgrade four additional Mk 45 naval guns for the US Navy, the company announced on 22 January.

The contract modification calls for upgrading existing Mk 45 naval guns to the Mod 4 configuration to increase the firepower and extend the range of the weapons. The deal is a modification to an initial ten-gun contract, and brings the full value of the award to $176.8 million for 14 guns.

The Mk 45 is a light, compact, five-inch fully automatic naval gun. Updates to the Mod 4 configuration include a structurally strengthened gun mount and more advanced electronics. With its stronger mount, the gun can achieve 50% higher firing energy, allowing projectiles or munitions to travel faster and farther. Featuring a touch-screen user interface, the new fully digitised control system also provides greater computing power.

The Mod 4 conversion also increases the gun’s adaptability for advanced munitions currently under development.

Work is expected to be complete by 2021.
