Hybrid Halvorsen loader set for demo

The US Air Force has awarded a contract to Concurrent Technologies Corporation to design, develop and test a hybrid repower kit to convert the Halvorsen loader from diesel to diesel/electric.

The contract follows an independent feasibility study conducted by the air force in 2017 to assess the prospects of converting the diesel Halvorsen 25K loader to a hybrid. The study revealed that the Halvorson could be converted into diesel/electric without mission impact. 

The hybrid capability of the converted loader will be demonstrated in 2019.

Halvorsen is a diesel-powered, quickly deployable, high-reach mechanised aircraft loader that can transport and lift up to 25,000lbs of cargo and load it onto military aircraft. The hybrid conversion aims to improve energy efficiency, safety, reliability and maintainability. A 20 to 40% improvement in energy efficiency is expected with the conversion.

The addition of batteries will enable the operator to charge Halvorsen from the grid. By maximising the use of grid power and battery mode, energy costs and engine run times can be reduced. These reduced engine hours will further result in reductions in maintenance.
