21st December 2020 - 12:30 GMT | by The Shephard News Team

Order for unprotected tractor trailers forms part of broader effort to expand German logistic capabilities.

The German Armed Forces have placed a €41 million ($49.88 million) order with Rheinmetall for 48 additional heavy tractor trailers with a 70t payload.

Delivery of a 24 unprotected SaZgM 70t mil trailers is to take place in 2021, with a further 24 to follow in 2022 as the German military seeks a substantial increase in organic logistic capacity.

The tractor trailers are primarily used for transporting heavy armoured vehicles such as the Leopard 2 MBT.

This latest order is part of a seven-year framework contract sealed in 2018 between the German Armed Forces and Rheinmetall for 137 SaZgM 70t mil trucks. The deal is worth up to €122 million and a total of 32 vehicles were delivered in 2019 and 2020.
