The US Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC) has awarded a $3 million contract to Qinetiq North America for its Wind Profiling Portable Radar (WiPPR) technology, the company announced on 8 March.

The WiPPR is designed to provide near real-time precision wind measurements to enable transport aircraft, including the C-130 and C-17, to carry out airdrop missions more accurately.

The contract will see Qinetiq design and build a prototype airborne WiPPR unit that will be tested for accuracy. Airborne WiPPR is based on the company's ground-based WiPPR technology used in research, weather, and commercial wind markets.

Bob Polutchko, vice president of Qinetiq North America's emerging markets, said: 'Airborne WiPPR will provide the airdrop aircraft an organic capability to characterise the air mass and execute a 'single-pass' precision resupply of troops in contact. This capability will reduce the exposure of aircraft and aircrews to enemy countermeasures.'
