Philippines receives first Hercules for heavy lifting

The airlift capacity of the Philippine Air Force is insufficient, so the arrival of an ex-USAF Hercules will be particularly welcome.

The first of two refurbished Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules airlifters from the US reached Villamor Air Base in Manila, the Philippines, on 29 January.

Bearing serial number ‘5125’, the aircraft is a former MC-130W Combat Spear special operations aircraft of the US Air Force that had been retired a few years earlier.

This aircraft was supposed to touch down in the Philippines last July, but COVID-19 is believed to have delayed the refurbishment process at the 309th Aircraft Maintenance and Regeneration Group near Tucson.

Upgrades include its avionics and a partial glass cockpit. Interestingly, this aircraft appears to have SATCOM ...
