NZ orders tanker from HHI

The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) will receive a new fleet tanker from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), according to a Ministry of Defence announcement on 18 July.

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee said the tanker to be acquired under the Maritime Sustainment Capability requirement will cost NZ$493 million (US$351 million).

It will also 'be ice-strengthened and winterised for operations in Antarctica', Brownlee noted. 'This will allow it to deliver fuel and other goods to support Scott Base and McMurdo Station during summer months once an icebreaker has cleared a path,' referring to New Zealand’s two scientific facilities in Antarctica.
