Metro Aerospace’s Microvanes, a drag-reduction and performance enhancement technology, is now available for Lockheed Martin C-130 and L-100 Hercules transport aircraft, the company announced on 12 July.

Adhesively fastened on both sides of the fuselage, the additive-manufactured Microvanes are designed to reduce total drag on the aircraft by reshaping air flow around the aft cargo door. According to the company, this saves more than 3% in fuel consumption, reducing engine wear and increasing time in flight.

Microvanes can be added and removed without permanent alterations to both legacy and J-model aircraft.

Leslie Peters, president and CEO of Metro Aerospace, said: ‘Obtaining the exclusive, global license to manufacture this patented technology has enabled Metro Aerospace to rapidly bring the Microvanes to market, providing operators with significant fuel savings and increased time on mission.’
