Iraq requests vessel support from US
The US State Department has made a determination approving a potential foreign military sale of follow-on technical support (FOTS) for vessels and a ship repair facility to Iraq, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced on 1 August. The estimated cost of the package is $150 million.
Iraq has requested FOTS for various US-origin naval vessels and an in-country ship repair facility. The package request includes procurement of spare and repair parts, support and test equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training equipment, and engineering and logistics support services.
The support covers patrol boats, offshore support vessels, fast assault boats, and rigid hull inflatable boats, and will help ensure that Iraq's navy is operationally capable of providing coastal defence and security.
If the deal goes ahead, Swiftships will be the prime contractor.
