IoT expands bot armies

The rapidly expanding ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) is significantly reinforcing the size and effect of the so-called ‘bot armies’ employed in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) cyberattacks. 

Ward Heinke, VP of strategic alliances and government markets at Forcepoint, addressed the changing face of DDoS attacks in which a specific site can be overwhelmed by traffic from multiple sources, during an industry keynote at this week’s NDIA 34th National Defense Forum. 

Speaking about the management of cyber risks in the global logistics chain supporting the US military, Heinke offered that the growth in unsecured IoT devices allowed reinforcement of these attacks.
