Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Ingalls Shipbuilding division has installed the deckhouse on the future USS Tripoli (LHA 7), the America-class amphibious assault ship, the company announced on 12 July.

The 701-short-ton deckhouse features five deck levels and includes radio and radar spaces, the primary flight control station, and the pilot house.

Tripoli will have an increased aviation fuel capacity, increase in available stowage for parts and support equipment, realignment and expansion of the aviation maintenance facilities and an enlarged hangar deck.

The vessel will operate as a flagship of the Expeditionary Strike Group. Ingalls has recently been contracted to build the next ship of its class, LHA 8.

Ingalls shipbuilding president Brian Cuccias said that the company is benefiting from serial production, with its shipbuilding crew being rolled over to work on the large-deck amphibious ships. He added that the construction milestones for the LHA 7 continue to be completed ahead of schedule, and that the shipyard will likely deliver its next amphibious ship in 2018.
