An Indian Air Force (IAF) EMB145 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEWC) aircraft has successfully completed its first air-to-air refuelling (AAR), the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 30 November.

The ability to refuel in flight will give the aircraft the capacity to fly mission of longer duration. A ten minute in-flight refuelling can generate an additional four hours of flying endurance.

The AAR was carried out by an Il-78 tanker using probe and drogue equipment. This refuelling method requires excellent flying skills as the receiving aircraft has to accurately insert the receptacle probe into the basket shaped drogue trailing behind the fuel tanker aircraft. During the process, both aircraft have to maintain extremely accurate flying parameters.

The MoD said the achievement 'has given a tremendous boost to Indian Air Force’s operational capability'.
