GE Aviation has received a contract to upgrade the Integrated Data Acquisition Recorder (IDAR) on the US Air Force’s KC-135 fleet, the company announced on 29 May.

Under the contract, GE Aviation will work with Rockwell Collins to upgrade the IDAR to provide components with new capabilities, including cybersecurity and potential data encryption features, which will extend the life of the KC-135 fleet.

The IDAR can simultaneously acquire, process and store critical aircraft data such as structural, engine and tracking information, while providing crash survivable flight data recording functionality.

Alan Caslavka, president of Avionics for GE Aviation, said: 'The IDAR will use an advanced, scalable real-time processor module common across our avionics products that simplifies development and reduces cost for our customers. This development work, scheduled for the next several years, advances our data recorder product line to meet current and future requirements.’
