Eurosatory 2012: Mission critical solar power assists SWaP issues

Renewable energy is 'life critical' to warfighters operating in the field for prolonged periods, according to a leading solar power specialist.

Speaking to Shephard at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris, Erick Fuentes, international sales manager for Global Solar, described communications as the 'most critical area' of a warfighter's duties and highlighted the importance of man-portable solar energy sources.

'Today's requirement is electricity and a soldier can only carry a certain number of batteries at any one time so there are size, weight and power issues,' Fuentes explained. 'The biggest challenge in warfare is logistics and fuel which will be targeted
