Newport News Shipbuilding carries on with maintenance and modernisation of USN submarine.

Repair, maintenance and modernisation work on the Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine USS Helena (SSN 725) will continue for another month, after the Newport News Shipbuilding division of Huntington Ingalls Industries received an $8.78 million contract modification.

Work is now scheduled for completion in May 2021, the DoD noted on 7 April.

USS Helena was commissioned in 1987. Shephard Defence Insight notes that the USN in 2019 began studying whether to extend the service life of some Los Angeles-class boats by 12 years, bringing their expected service life to 45 years.
