Australia is set to upgrade facilities at Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Base Butterworth, the Australian Department of Defence (DoD) announced on 25 June.

The $22 million investment will ensure that the Butterworth Base, which is used by the Australian Defence Force (ADF), remains fit for purpose well into the future. RMAF Butterworth currently hosts around 50 ADF personnel and that number can rise to up to 350 during exercises. The upgrades will start with a detailed assessment, to be done in consultation with Malaysia.

In order to strengthen its defence relationship with Malaysia, Australia has also committed to continue to support the development of Malaysia’s Urban Combat Training facility. The government will also increase the number of defence scholarships offered to Malaysia for study in Australia each year from five to eight, and will provide further F/A-18 spare parts to assist with the sustainment of Malaysia’s fleet.
