AUSA 2013: US-Afghanistan retrograde on track

At least $17 billion of US equipment in Afghanistan will need to be extracted by the end of 2014, it has emerged.

Speaking at the AUSA exhibition, Gen Dennis Via, commander of US Army Materiel Command (AMC), said that some of this equipment was scheduled to be sold as excess defence articles (EDAs) and that this option was being pursued with countries interested in purchasing equipment.

He added that the cost of the withdrawal was slated at $5-7 billion DoD-wide with army equipment representing $2-3 billion of that sum.
