US Army looks to commercial fuel trailer options

The US Army is exploring the possible application of commercial fuel trailer designs to satisfy elements of its Tactical Fuel Distribution System (TFDS). Service exploration of the commercial market was outlined in a recently-released ‘sources sought’ announcement.

According to the announcement, the army is conducting market research ‘to determine if existing commercial or non-developmental items are available and suitable to fulfil the army's requirement for tactical petroleum semitrailers’ in the 5,000-6,200-gallon range.

‘As currently envisioned, the tactical petroleum semitrailers will consist of a 5,00 - 6,200-gallon [18,927 – 23,470-litre] TFDS, with off-road capability and protection against small arms fire,” it
