AM General has received a contract from the US Army Contracting Command to manufacture up to 2,800 new M997A3 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) ambulances, the company announced on 17 September.

The total value of the five-year contract, if all options are exercised, is approximately $800 million.

Under the contract, AM General will procure all system materials and parts, and manufacture the chassis and body structure before shipping the integrated chassis system to Rock Island Arsenal. There the ambulance shelter will be manufactured and assembled into the final product.

The M997A3 is an ambulance configuration of the HMMWV vehices and is equipped with advanced armour protection. The ambulance can transport up to four litter patients, eight ambulatory patients—or a combination of both—as well as medical personnel, equipment and a driver.

The first ambulance deliveries are scheduled for the second quarter of 2019.
