Leonardo’s AW109 Trekker light twin-engine helicopter has achieved European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) type certification, the company announced on 27 December.

Deliveries of the aircraft will start in the first quarter of 2018.

The AW109 Trekker is equipped with skid landing gear and Genesys Aerosystems' glass cockpit. The cockpit display system provides pilots with the necessary information to help reduce their workload while flying in challenging environments and demanding weather conditions.

The helicopter is powered by two FADEC equipped Pratt & Whitney Canada PW207C turbine engines. The cabin can accommodate up to six passengers or one stretcher with three/four medical attendants or two stretchers and two medical attendants.

The aircraft’s safety features include a cocoon-type airframe; crash resistant fuel system, crew and passengers seats, full Cat A/Class 1 performance in hot environments and a 30 minute run-dry main gear box.

The AW109 Trekker can be configured for emergency medical services, search and rescue, law enforcement, utility, surveillance, passenger transport and government duties.
