Kawak Aviation has received an FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its CH-47D Chinook firefighting Aerial Liquid Delivery System (ALDS) and auxiliary hydraulic system, the company announced on 6 June.

The ALDS 2,500-US gallon tank fills in less than 40 seconds and can release a full load of water in three seconds. The new system features an independent 50hp hydraulic system, all new refill pump and new water tank doors that slide rather than swing open.

The hydraulic system provides more power for the firefighting system without interfering with aircraft functions necessary for flight.

A secondary 128-US gallon tank can add retardant as the main tank is filled.

The system features a live telemetry functionality that automatically records how much water is taken on, how much is dropped and where it was dropped. The information is then transmitted to the agency managing the fire to assist in analysing utilisation of resources.

The new systems are set to enter service with customer Billings Flying Service this summer.
