Heli-Expo 2017: Flight vision set to improve for Leonardo helicopter pilots
As Heli-Expo 2017 gets underway, Elbit Systems has announced that it has signed a long-term agreement with Leonardo Helicopters to equip its commercial helicopters with the Heli-ClearVision enhanced flight vision system (EFVS).
Yoram Shmuely, general manager of Elbit Systems Aerospace Division, highlighted that the software suite enables pilots to perform missions under adverse weather and bad visibility conditions.
'Leveraging our world leading solutions of EFVS for fix-wing platforms to the helicopter market will enable pilots to fly eyes out and operate safely under degraded visibility and weather conditions that prevented such operation in the past,' he said.
The Heli-ClearVision suite comprises a set of HUDs and enhanced vision systems (EVS), including the ClearVision EVS camera, Skylens and SkyVis wearable displays.
The Skylens shows high resolution information, images and video on a head-up high-transparency visor, while the SkyVis is a HMD with line-of-sight technology. According to the company, the displays provide 'unparalleled out of the window' capabilities for the first time on commercial helicopters.
A synthetic map based on a digital terrain model database combines with the real-world picture created by the EVS to generate a panoramic image that improves the pilot's situational awareness.
Pilot orientation is further enhanced by the system's ability to detect lights, such as those of oil rigs, helipads and runways.
Daniele Romiti, MD at Leonardo Helicopters, explained that the partnership of the two companies contributes to Leonardo's commitment to enhance the flight experience for pilots operating its platforms.
'By offering these cutting-edge systems and technologies on our new generation platforms we position Leonardo Helicopters more and more as the most capable helicopter to perform any mission with high safety in all weather conditions,' he said.
The complete Heli-ClearVision suite will be showcased at Elbit Systems' booth during Heli-Expo 2017.
