The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded a £160 million contract to Kier VolkerFitzpatrick to deliver new infrastructure to prepare Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath in Suffolk for two squadrons of US Air Force F-35 aircraft.

The contract includes the construction of a six-bay flight simulator, an aircraft maintenance unit, new hangars and storage facilities. The flight simulator will have the capacity to link to other simulators used by pilots across the UK and beyond enabling joint training.

The Suffolk airbase will be the first permanent international site for the US Air Force’s F-35s in Europe. Co-locating the US and UK F-35 capability in the UK will help strengthen the military ties between the two nations as well as the partnership between the RAF and US Air Force.

Main construction work is set to begin in summer 2019, and the first new F-35 aircraft is scheduled to arrive at the facility in 2021.
