Brazil orders river hospital ship
Bibi Eireli Shipyard is to build a new river hospital ship for the Brazilian Navy under a contract announced on 6 January.
The vessel will be delivered with specialist healthcare equipment in August 2022, according to a statement from the navy.
Manaus-based Bibi Eireli won the contract after a competitive tender.
The Brazilian Navy currently operates five hospital ships for operations in river areas. Pará (pictured) is the largest, displacing 1,060t, with the others being Doutor Montenegro, Oswaldo Cruz, Carlos Chagas, Tenente Maximiano and Soares de Meirelles.
At this stage it is not known whether the new vessel with augment this fleet or replace one or more ship.
