Tata wins Indian 4x4 contract

India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded Tata Motors a contract for 3,192 Safari Storme 4x4 light vehicles, which is part of a retirement plan for the Indian Army's inventory of 30,000 or so Maruti Gypsy vehicles.

The Tata order includes vehicles for the Indian Navy, although numbers have not been specified for each of the two forces. Timelines for deliveries have not been revealed either.

While the Safari has a civilian variant, the diesel-powered military version has an upgraded drivetrain and significantly modified suspension. It is powered by a 2.2-litre engine putting out 154hp.
