US Navy launches Hershel Woody Williams ship
The US Navy has launched Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) Hershel Woody Williams at the General Dynamics NASSCO (GD-NASSCO) shipyard, it was announced on 22 August.
The ship will undergo a series of at-sea tests and trials prior to delivery of the vessel to the navy in early 2018.
The vessel will be deployed to support aviation mine countermeasure and special operations force missions. In addition to the flight deck, the vessel has a hangar with two aviation operating spots capable of handling MH-53E Sea Dragon or equivalent helicopters, accommodations, work spaces and ordnance storage for embarked force.
The ship also features enhanced C4I to support mission planning and execution; and reconfigurable mission deck area to store equipment to include mine sleds and rigid hull inflatable boats.
GD-NASSCO has started fabrication of the next ESB in January and expects to lay the keel by September.
