MSV(L) prototype construction begins
Vigor has laid the keel for the US Army’s new landing craft, the Maneuver Support Vessel (Light) (MSV(L)) at its Aluminum Fabrication Facility in Vancouver, Washington.
Vigor was awarded the contract to build MSV(L) in October 2017.
Based on a design developed with BMT, the vessel will expand the capabilities of the current LCM-8 Type, while retaining its reliability and versatility. It is designed to move personnel, material and equipment from deep-draft sealift ships off the coast and bring it to inland waterways.
Once the first prototype, named SSG Elroy F Wells, is complete, the vessel will be tested and refined. Four Low Rate Production vessels will then be produced, followed by up to 32 vessels once Full Rate Production is underway.
