Kinetics Drive Solutions' transmissions have been selected by Science Applications International (SAIC) for the Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV) Survivability Upgrade programme, the company announced on 18 October.

SAIC is delivering upgraded AAV SU vehicles to the US Marine Corps, and the vehicles will be equipped with Kinetics' MD500 marine drive power-take-off and InfiniDrive HMX3000 transmission systems.

The MD500 and HMX3000 technologies will enhance both land and water mobility of the AAV SU vehicle.

The transmission enables the track speed to be optimised independent of the engine speed for transition from water to land. When in water, the transmission is disconnected enabling the MD500 to provide the AAV SU with the maximum power at the water jets for fast ship-to-shore operation.

At the centre of the HMX3000 is Kinetics’ integrated pump motors and transmission control system which delivers a highly efficient and power-dense transmission. The company’s intelligent transmission controls is also matched to the engine’s operating curve to generate maximum efficiency across the entire speed range of the vehicle.

The electronic control and by-wire operation of the transmission offers the USMC the forward-looking option to upgrade the AAV SU for remote controlled or autonomous operations.
