Indian Army needs to overcome critical deficiencies

Facing increasing cross-border intrusions by militants, the Indian Army is looking at fast tracking procurement of ammunition from existing suppliers in the next 4-5 months instead of the usual process that can take up to nine years.

A budget of around $1 billion has been set aside for the immediate procurement of small arms and ammunition for the 1.2 million-strong Indian Army. 

The force acknowledges that vast quantities of the inventory has become unserviceable due to inappropriate handling during usage, storage conditions and transportation, expired shelf life of components, and manufacturing and design defects.
