BAE Systems has been awarded a $9.6 million contract to modernise the US Navy’s USS Philippine Sea guided-missile cruiser, the company announced on 12 February.

The company will carry out the modernisation work over the course of ten months, to complete in February 2019. The contract includes options that, if exercised, would bring its cumulative value to around $72 million.

Todd Hooks, general manager of BAE Systems’ Jacksonville Ship Repair, said: ‘We have extensive experience with the navy’s Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers and specifically with the Philippine Sea.

'We will utilise our cruiser experience to accomplish the docking selected restricted availability and return the ship back to the fleet ready for continued service.'
