USS Theodore Roosevelt carries out FAS
A US Navy Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, USS Theodore Roosevelt, has successfully completed a fuelling at sea (FAS) with guided-missile destroyer USS Sampson, the US Pacific Command announced on 22 August.
This is the first time since 2015 an aircraft carrier has successfully fuelled another ship. During the FAS, Theodore Roosevelt sent 150,000 gallons of JP-5 jet fuel over to Sampson.
Theodore Roosevelt is currently conducting composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX). This tests a carrier strike group's ability to perform in situations similar to the ones they will face during deployment. Part of these tests involved multiple practice runs, where the aircraft carrier linked fuel hoses with another ship but did not send fuel.
The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG) will be deployed on operations worldwide following the successful completion of COMPTUEX.
TRCSG is comprised of Carrier Strike Group 9 staff, Destroyer Squadron 23 staff, Theodore Roosevelt, Carrier Air Wing 17, the DESRON 23 ships USS Halsey, USS Higgins, USS Preble and Sampson, as well as guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill.
