The European Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR) has awarded a €1.7 billion contract to Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Naval Group to deliver four new Logistic Support Ships (LSS) for the French Navy, OCCAR announced on 31 January.

The contract, awarded on behalf of the French Defence procurement agency, will enable the French Navy to progressively replace its current logistic fleet with the new vessels, the first two of which will be delivered by 2025.

The new double-hulled LSS vessels will provide support for any blue-sea combat fleet, such as aircraft-carriers, landing helicopter dock ships and destroyers, by delivering fuel, ammunitions, spare parts and food.

The LSS vessels will be based on the design of the LSS Vulcano, designed by Fincantieri and ordered for the Italian Navy, in the frame of an OCCAR-managed cooperation between Italy and France.

Under the contract, Fincantieri will provide technical assistance as well as erect some parts of the hull of the French Navy’s new vessels.
