Rotational units ‘new norm’ for US Army NIEs

One significant aspect of the US Army’s Network Integration Evaluation (NIE) 17.2, now underway on the desert ranges of Fort Bliss, Texas, and White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, is the use of a rotational brigade that ‘deployed’ to the former location to serve as the cornerstone operational element.

The Army began conducting NIEs in 2011 as a means to test and assess components of the new digital network that emerged in the aftermath of the ill-fated Future Combat Systems programme. The effort reflects cooperation across the Army’s Joint Modernization Command, Army Test and Evaluation Command and Office of Assistant
