First French A330 MRTT flies
Airbus Defence and Space has successfully completed the maiden flight of the first A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) for France, the company announced on 7 September.
The aircraft, which will be known in French service as Phénix, is the first of nine ordered by the French Defence Procurement Agency, with a further three expected to be ordered.
For its maiden flight the aircraft performed a 3hr 25 minute flight, performing 'in line with expectations', according to the company.
The Phénix fleet will be equipped with a combination of the Airbus Aerial Refuelling Boom System and underwing hose-and-drogue refuelling pods, and can carry 272 passengers or be configured for medical evacuation. The delivery of the first aircraft is due in 2018.
This is the second new standard A330 MRTT to fly, featuring structural modifications, aerodynamic improvements giving a reduced fuel-burn, upgraded avionics computers and enhanced military systems.
