Canadian subs struggling for full operational capability

The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) has admitted that only a single Victoria-class submarine is ‘fully-operational’ with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), despite signing a contract in 2008 to support all four boats.

According to the DND, only HMCS Victoria is fully operational following the grounding of HMCS Corner Brook in 2011 and the discovery of a defect in the diesel generator of HMCS Windsor. The fourth boat, HMCS Chicoutimi, is in an Extended Docking Work Period (EDWP) which will see the maintenance and upgrade of over 200 on-board systems.
