Hercules fuel efficiency studies show promise

Wind tunnel experiments to boost the fuel efficiency of the C-130 Hercules have shown that a system of microvanes show the most promise.

Lockheed Martin has been studying possible fuel saving initiatives for the C-130 fleet for two years. The company has looked at several options including wing-tip mounted winglets, microvanes and a system called Lift Distribution Control System (LDCS).

'The microvanes are showing the most promise,' explained Jim Grant, Lockheed Martin vice president of business development for air mobility, to Shephard.
