Dry dock brings strategic succour to Indian Navy

22nd June 2017 - 07:09 GMT | by Neelam Mathews in Chennai

A $71 million floating dock (FDNavy-2) built by Larsen and Toubro (L&T) at its Kattupalli yard near Chennai will considerably improve dry dock slot constraints at naval yards that are keeping Indian Navy (IN) ships off duty.

The 185m-long and 40m-wide dock was formally lowered into the Bay of Bengal earlier this week. It will go through an afloat phase and harbour trials before delivery to the IN by December.

It is India’s first indigenously built floating dry dock for medium-sized naval ships such as destroyers and submarines of up to 8,000t displacement and draughts of up to 7m.
