Japan makes decisions on Aegis Ashore deployment

Japan’s MoD has decided to allocate two Aegis Ashore facilities armed with SM-3 Block IIA missiles to the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF), and to position the twin sites within existing training areas.

The government has selected JGSDF training grounds at Araya in Akita prefecture and Mutsumi in Yamaguchi prefecture. The MoD has already negotiated with local governments and it has budgeted for geological and radio wave interference surveys in FY2018.

However, if Aegis Ashore is deployed in the Mutsumi training ground, some parts of Japan’s southwestern islands will not be protected. That being the case, consideration is being given
