Northrop radars for Taiwan F-16s
Northrop Grumman will provide 142 APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) systems to Lockheed Martin for Taiwan Air Force F-16s, the company announced on 2 February.
This new production contract is part of the air force F-16 upgrade programme. The first SABR is scheduled to be delivered to Lockheed Martin in 2016.
Jeff Leavitt, vice president, combat avionics systems business unit, Northrop Grumman, said: 'The maturity of SABR's design and our team enabled us to bring all design reviews to a successful completion less than one year after contract award.'
SABR is a multi-functional Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) fire control radar system that will provide the F-16 with fifth-generation air-to-ground and air-to-air radar capabilities. Moreover, it will increase the situational awareness, targeting and ISR capabilities of F-16 pilots. Northrop's AESA radars are presently used in F-35 Lightning II, F-22 Raptor and F-16 Block 60 aircraft.
