Euronaval 2018: Sea Giraffe stretches capability to include hypersonic threat detection

As western navies come face to face with the threats posed by next-generation anti-ship missile technologies, Saab has chosen Euronaval 2018 to launch a new Hypersonic Detection Mode (HDM) for its fixed-array Sea Giraffe 4A radar.

The mode will enable operators to detect objects moving at very high speeds, such as hypersonic missiles, according to the company. While the theoretical range of the 4A radar runs to around 400km, in reality detection is limited when mounted on a surface ship to around 35km, or the limit of the horizon.
