The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) has signed the contract with Boeing Defence Australia for the upgrade of its military communications, the DoD announced on 4 September.

The contract, worth around $458.82 million, will be managed from the company’s Brisbane facility. GH Varley and Harris Communications Australia will act as subcontractors.

Under the contract, Boeing will develop, design and deliver a new-generation digital communications system to support the deployment of operational headquarters and enable access to defence’s strategic networks. It forms part of the Project LAND 2072 Phase 2B project.

An integrated support contract will also be included for operational availability throughout the project. The delivery of initial operational capability is expected in 2017 and the delivery of final operational capability is expected to be in 2020.

The project will see the DoD replace its ageing computer networks and mobile communication systems, switching over to digital video, voice and data services over wired and wireless infrastructure.

The new capability will enable deployed forces to operate more effectively by providing digital communications, and giving commanders an increased level of situational awareness, command and control, and information sharing capability; improving the capacity, flexibility and responsiveness of the ADF during operations.
