The United States Air Force is seeking industry input on widely anticipated requirements to demilitarise the only US training range that allows the live-fire of the 30mm depleted uranium (DU) round used on the A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft

The DU round, officially designated PGU-14/B Armor-Piercing Incendiary (API), is one of three rounds used on the A-10’s GAU-8/A cannon, the other two being PGU-13/B High-Explosive Incendiary (HEI) and the PGU-15/B Target Practice (TP) rounds. The rounds are loaded in what is known as a ‘combat mix,’ usually featuring an HEI round followed by five API rounds.
