THAAD rushed to South Korea
In immediate response to North Korea's firing of four ballistic missiles, three of which landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone, the US deployed the first elements of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery to South Korea overnight on 6 March.
Pictures showed the US Air Force airlifted in two HEMTT-based THAAD launchers to Osan Air Force Base via C-17 transport aircraft. A lot of ancillary equipment is required before the unit becomes operational, but this could occur as early as next month.
Adm Harry Harris, head of the US Pacific Command (PACOM), said in a statement,
