Post-Ukraine, US looks to boost ‘grey-zone’ research

Supporting operations in the so-called ‘grey zone’, the amorphous space between peacetime activities and conventional warfare, has become a more pressing concern since Russia’s actions in Ukraine. 

The 2014 annexation of Crimea by unidentifiable Russian troops, using non-traditional tactics, and its potential consequences for other countries in eastern Europe and elsewhere has the US and NATO worried.

Grey-zone action refers to activity that is not openly declared and often prosecuted using subtle methods, for example, social, psychological, religious, cyber, economic and other means, according to the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
